For those of you wondering about the Twilight movies, here are my personal opinions:
Twilight was an average adaptation. It could have been a TV movie. Pattison's stare was a bit annoying. For all its intensity, there was no emotion in it. The bit where Bella tells Edward she thinks he's a vampire, was rushed and almost panicky. Definitely not the girl from the book who had already decided that it didn't matter. James was not at all what I expected. The whole fight scene was a little silly, but a necessary ramp up of tension since the chase was cut short.
New Moon is a bit better. Screenolay-wise it was handled well. The passage of time after Edward leaves was done very nicely.
OK, so the wolf pack in human form really adds to the film (ah, the eye candy  ).
The wigs for the Cullen clan (and Jacob's long hair) still need a lot of help, or better yet, use the actors' real hair. The contrast between Jacob's wig and his real hair was laughable. Rosalie apparently has no scalp at all. Jasper looked more like a Valentine's cupid than ever.
Yea! Alice had some screen time! Yea! Graham Greene played Harry Clearwater!
There were a lot fewer brooding-but-empty stares, but emotional range still escapes Pattison and Stewart. It's not enough to scrunch up your face like you have gas when attempting to portray deep emotional pain. Here's an idea: real tears. Not a one shed on screen-- plenty in the audience for those of us who could fill in the gaps with our book background. The actors are improving, but are not there yet. Perhaps Eclipse will be even better. |

| Ah Twilight; the franchise Potterfans get to hate. It's nice not to be the lowest link in the fantasy fandom food chain any more. Pullman fans sgenius at Tolkien fans, who sgenius at Rowling fans, so now we get to sgenius at Moyer fans. I'm not keen on the franchise myself; haven't been exposed to much of it but I'm a bit freaked by the whole Mormon "teaching the virtues of abstinence" thing. I'd like to see how strongly that message takes root when her readers get into high school. |

Wow. I didn't know that was something that Meyer was supposed to be pushing with Twilight. It seemed to me that Bella (and Edward to a certain extent) was willing, but they didn't because it would be risking her life. His personal objection was understandable as he was a product of his age (the early 19th century)-- marriage first-- and that was also a stall to keep Bella human. It didn't seem preachy to me, but then I'm not tightly wrapped up in the religious aspect of things. |

| I haven't read or seen any of the Twilight stories, so this is O/T, but I just wanted to know, Diri, where do you think Percy Jackson is going to fall on the snob-scale? It is far more comparable to HP than Twilight could ever be, so how do you think the HP fans will take to it? |
